Halloween (Samhian)
When October’s chill creeps in and daylight shrinks, you can almost feel the world shifting gears. Something old stirs—a memory, maybe, or just a hint of magic in the air.

Long before anyone called it Halloween, people  lit fires and clung to their beliefs to fend off the dark. Way back, the Celts marked Samhain, the end of harvest, the start of the long night.

This wasn’t just a date on the calendar. For them, it was a doorway. The boundary between the living and the dead blurred. Spirits wandered. People showed respect, left out offerings, and lit bonfires on the hills to welcome ancestors and scare off troublemakers from beyond. They didn’t just hope the ghosts would pass by. They made sure of it.

Then Christianity arrived. Instead of wiping out Samhain, it folded the old ways into new ones. All Saints’ Day landed on November 1st, and the night before picked up a new name: All Hallows’ Eve—Halloween.

The custom of “souling”—kids or the poor going door to door, trading prayers for the dead for little cakes—echoes in the way kids trick-or-treat now.

In medieval England and Ireland, people carved grotesque faces into turnips or beets, placing candles inside them to frighten away evil spirits or mischievous souls like “Stingy Jack”—a wandering ghost condemned to roam the earth with only a hollowed out turnip lamp to light his way.
Día de los Muertos
Where Death and Life Dance as One

Each year, beginning on October 31st and ending on the 2nd of November, the streets and cemeteries of Mexico overflow with colour, candlelight, and song. Sugar skulls smile from market stalls, marigolds fill the air with their scent, and relatives gather to welcome home the souls of the deceased. Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — is a feast that turns grief into music, and memory into ritual.

At its essence, Día de los Muertos is not a day of sorrow, but of presence. It is a day when worlds are most indistinct, when the living open their doors and hearts wide to those who have abandoned life. The dead, in this system of beliefs, are never really absent — merely waiting to be remembered.

The celebrations have their roots going back to pre-Columbian times. Long before Spanish colonization, the Mexica (Aztec), Maya, and Purépecha cultures honored death as an extension of life. The cosmos for them was circular, creation and destruction were partners in an eternal rhythm. Death was not cessation, but metamorphosis.

When Spanish Catholicism arrived in the 16th century, these Indigenous practices merged with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

From the mixture, something uniquely Mexican emerged: a holiday that synthesized Indigenous spiritual thought and Catholic imagery.

Guy Fawkes Night
Behind this fiery spectacle lies a story of rebellion, religion, and a failed revolution that shaped the course of English history.

Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, commemorates the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605—a conspiracy by a group of disillusioned English Catholics who sought to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I. Their aim was to end Protestant rule and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plan was daring, dramatic—and disastrous. Guy Fawkes, a soldier and explosives expert, was caught red-handed in the cellars beneath Parliament with barrels of gunpowder ready to ignite.

His capture turned him into the face of the failed plot, though he was just one of several conspirators.  After torture and trial, Fawkes and his fellow plotters were executed, their failure cemented as a warning against treason.
In the immediate aftermath, people across England lit bonfires in celebration of the King’s survival. Parliament  decreed the 5th of November a national day of thanksgiving.

Over time, the ritual of burning effigies, first of Fawkes himself, later of other unpopular figures—became part of the tradition. Yet as centuries passed, the event’s tone shifted. What began as a stern act of patriotic thanksgiving softened into a popular, even playful, festival.

The Eye of Horus
Horus was an Egyptian god who was connected with the sky, justice royalty, and protection. The Eye of Horus is represented as a scared eye with patterns that symbolize a falcon's feathered plumage. The Symbol is also linked to healing, monarchy, and protection, and it was thought to have magical and protective abilities. Ancient Egyptian mythology portrays Horus losing his left eye in a struggle with his uncle "Seth", and the God "Thoth" later restored the eye. This fight symbolized healing and rebirth, and the lost repaired eye became a potent protective symbol and was used later as an amulet. "Ra" was an important deity in ancient Egyptian religion, and he was associated with the sun, rebirth, creation, and life, and it was symbolized by the Eye of Ra which is a fierce and burning eye. The Eye of Ra also depicts the sun's vigilance as well as its potential to kill foes and bring evildoers to justice. The Eye of Ra is also associated with light and divine wisdom. There are some ancient mythologies about the Eye of Horus is said to be a depiction of the Eye of Ra, as it represents a unified notion of divine vision and protection. This ancient symbol has importance in Egyptian mythology where it is connected with great deities such as Horus and Ra. The eye is a sign of royal authority, good health, and protection from bad powers, and its usage in mythology shows the interdependence of many parts of the divine in ancient Egyptian belief systems.
The Mjölnir
During the Viking Age, many people sported Mjölnir pendants, which confirms the hammer's importance in Norse culture. These relics usually tie back to Thor's fights against the destructive jötnar. A classic example of this can be seen in the Þrymskviða, where Mjölnir is cleverly taken back from the jötunn Þrymr.Additionally, Latin texts from figures such as Adam of Bremen and Saxo Grammaticus offer more historical mentions of Thor's hammer. They describe Thor brandishing hammer-like items, linking the myth to physical evidence and hinting at a true respect for Mjölnir in real life. What's intriguing is that Mjölnir wasn't just a fighting tool. It was also used in celebrations of births, marriages, and possibly even funerals. While we can't confirm that Mjölnir was made from uru metal, like in Marvel's depiction, it's evident that this hammer was, and still is, fundamental to the legacy of the Norse

A short blog on the power of Rings

I wear many rings, people sometimes ask about them. The truth is I have a fascination with them and have collected many in my travels. I sometimes make a gift of a ring, but always I will wear it first because a ring is not like many other gifts. It has power. I will try and explain my thoughts on them. Throughout  history, rings have emerged as compelling motifs in mythology and as enduring symbols of power. There is profound significance in rings, both in myths from various cultures and as symbols of authority throughout history. In examining the mythical and symbolic qualities associated with rings, let us think about the deeper meanings they hold and the essence of their enduring appeal.Rings are a powerful symbol, their circular form, representing infinity, unity, and continuation. In mythology, this shape signifies the divine and eternal nature of gods and goddesses, elevating the status of the bearer. Additionally, the self-contained nature of rings symbolizes protection, encasing the wearer in a shield of power and authority.Across various mythologies and cultures, rings have consistently held immense power and significance.

They have been portrayed as objects with extraordinary abilities, serving as conduits of power as well as being symbols of authority. Rings have fascinated us for centuries, evidence of their use dating back to the ancient civilizations such as those of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Delving into the mythologies of these ancient cultures reveals the significant roles that rings played in their history. For example, the Egyptian god Osiris wore a ring that granted him dominion over life and death. The Greeks believed the god Hades wore a ring that allowed him to control the underworld. Such beliefs exemplify the deep-rooted perception of rings as icons of immense power and authority. In mythological stories  rings have often played the part of being both captivating and enchanting influences. Tales often describe rings that possess supernatural qualities, capable of bestowing special abilities upon their wearers. In Norse mythology, Odin's ring Draupnir was believed to produce eight identical rings every ninth night. These enchanted rings symbolize not only the transformative power of the object but also the ongoing legacy it carried, reinforcing the perception of rings as symbols of power. In the Hindu epic, the "Mahabharata,"  the magical ring Nagamani is capable of transforming materials into precious gems.

Example These mythical rings emphasise the association between rings and the supernatural, solidifying their status as potent symbols of power. One of the most iconic instances of a ring's influence is found in the legend of King Arthur. The sword Excalibur and the coronation ring were emblematic of Arthur's divine right to rule. (people often remember the story of the sword, but not the ring.) Furthermore, the legend of the Nibelungen rings, like the cursed ring Andvaranaut, exemplifies rings as complex symbols, often bringing both immense power but bestowing dire consequences upon their owners.Within Greek mythology, the golden rings called "beroṓa" function as mystical objects that allow gods, such as Hermes, to transform into animals. Additionally, divine rings like Hephaestus' wedding ring and Apollo's radiant ring exemplify the manner in which these artifacts encapsulate unique divine attributes.Rings serve  as visible symbols of earthly power and authority since the Middle Ages, monarchs and nobles use signet rings to signify their position and to seal critical documents. The Papal Ring, or the "Ring of the Fisherman," grants the Pope expansive authority, signifying his divine connection to St. Peter.Beyond their mythical and historical contexts, rings are also associated with magical properties, they possess healing energies, ward off negative forces, or provide a connection to unseen realms. Symbolically, rings represent commitment, loyalty, and love, most notably exemplified by the exchange of wedding rings. The power attributed to rings is not solely confined to historical and cultural narratives; it also encompasses the psychological impact they have on individuals. As symbols of individual expression or silent declarations of personal identity, rings stimulate the human imagination and serve as souvenirs of significant moments.Throughout history, rings have represented divine attributes, dominion, and authority. While their power may elicit profound consequences. Something perhaps to consider when one beckons to you in a dark and mysterious shop you just happened to find one day while out walking…
